The influencing factors for developing Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV). New curriculum is being developed for technicians to work on CAVs.

Description:
A presentation for the 2017 North American Automotive Teachers (NACAT) Conference held at Macomb Community College from July 17-21, 2017. 

New vehicles contain numerous automated systems and more will be added to meet the safety requirements of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are automated systems that improve driver and passenger safety. Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) have 5 levels of ADAS.

Some of the benefits from Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are increased road capacity, driver relief to do other tasks and the removal of constraints for those who are unable to drive.

AVs are connected to other vehicles, (V2V), road Infrastructure (V2I), mapping systems, traffic weather, and entertainment (V2X). The data generated from all of the connections pose cybersecurity issues as well as potential vehicle errors from software and weather conditions.

Macomb Community College is developing the Vehicle Development Technician Associates Degree that combines technician skills required in the field of automated vehicles. Currently the CAAT Resource Library contains (CAV) curriculum for these three classes:

• IT 311 Sensors used in connected and automated vehicles
• IT 312 Navigation techniques used in connected and automated vehicles
• Automated, Connected, and Intelligent Vehicles
