STEAM Summer Camp
July 29 - August 2, 2019
August 5 - 9, 2019
The CAAT and Macomb Community College collaborated with Macomb Foundation generous contributors, General Motors and Bosch, to offer 48 area middle school students the opportunity to explore STEAM careers through interactive, hands-on activities at week-long STEAM Career Camps. Activities focused on STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics).
Several Macomb faculty members and the CAAT’s STEM Outreach Coordinator, Saleta McMurray, engaged students with hands-on experiments and activities and explained how they apply to STEAM careers.
- Science activities include examples of chemical transformations – one using a chemical solution and one using heat – to change a penny’s color from copper to gold, and a physical transformation by freezing a rose with liquid nitrogen and smashing it. Students also built a rocket which they were allowed to launch outside.
- Technology and Engineering activities focused on automotive engineering and allowed students the opportunity to build Lego robot cars.
- Arts & Architecture activities allowed students to design a room and built a model from their own design.
- Math activities utilized obtuse, acute and right angles to depict math as non-intimidating. Students learned about computer bytes by using coding to create a keychain with their initials on it. Students also created transporters to carry as many pennies as far as possible. Students were also asked to create a penny transporter using provided materials in a short period of time.
On Friday morning each week, students were provided the unique opportunity to participate in a field trip to College Park Industries, a bio-technology company located across the street from Macomb Community College. College Park designs and manufactures a full line of anatomically correct, customizable prosthetic foot systems, upper limb solutions, endoskeletal components and MetroLiner gel products. After the tour, parents joined their students at Macomb for lunch and saw a video depicting all of the exciting and educational activities the students participated in throughout the week.
After attending STEAM Summer Camp, 100% of the students who completed a survey expressed interest in pursuing a STEAM career, most students also expressed interest in learning more about the STEAM subject areas. Students comments on the survey included:

Girl Scouts Engineering Day
February 23, 2019
The CAAT is pleased to have hosted the
Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM) Engineering Day. Junior, cadette, and senior girl scouts and parents participated in the event at Macomb Community College's South Campus. The event encouraged girl scouts in grades 4th-12th to explore the fields of engineering and technology.
The morning session included engineering-focused hands-on activities, including sessions led by our own Saleta McMurray. The afternoon session featured the movie
Dream BIG: Engineering our World, and various robotics demonstrations by the
Oakland University Makers Club.
This event completed some requirements of the THINK LIKE AN ENGINEER badge, as part of our annual ENGINEERS WEEK CELEBRATION.
