• Free Classroom STEM Lab Descriptions

    All labs require a one day preparation from the classroom teacher, prior to the scheduled days required.  Requirements vary, based on the lab selected.

    Difficulty Groups of Days
    Career Class - STEM Session**NEW**
    A one hour class which includes a discussion of the different career paths available in STEM and their importance for building the future. Includes an introductory STEM Lab.
    Level 2 Difficulty groups of 2-3 1 Day
    Lift it with a Lever
    Students will build a table top lever and investigate how changing the length of the effort arm affects the amount of effort it takes to lift an object.
    Level 2 Difficulty groups of 2-3 1 Day
    Mini Marshmallow Shooters  
    Students will use cups, balloons, tape and mini-marshmallows to create a marshmallow shooter. There be a contest at the end to see how accurate the shooter was designed.
    Level 2 Difficulty groups of 1-2 1 Day
    Art Wiggle Bot
    Students hook up a simple DC motor to a battry in order to make a simple, fun robot that wiggles around on a piece of paper and makes its own art.
    Level 3 Difficulty groups of 2-3 1 Day
    Buoyancy Lab
    Students design a boat out of various materials with the objective of holding the most coins before sinking. Students figure out surface area, center of gravity and material use in order to be successful. Students improve upon their design after building and testing. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose boat can hold the most coins before sinking.
    Level 3 Difficulty groups of 2-3 1 Day
    Hovercraft
    Students design and build a Hovercraft out of various materials that will float a CD on a cushion of air over a table top or floor surface. After each trial, students will improve upon their design.
    Level 3 Difficulty groups of 1-2 1 Day
    Safety Helmet
    Students design and build a bicycle helmet out of various materials that will protect an egg from breaking when it is dropped vertically from  10 feet up. Students will have one chance to test their safety helmet. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose helmet protects the egg.
    Level 4 Difficulty groups of 2 1 Day
    Newton Car
    Student use a wooden car and rubber bands to accelerate a mass off the car. During a set of experiments, students will vary the mass being tossed from the car, change the number of rubber bands used to toss the mass and change the container size holding the mass. Students learn about Newton’s Second Law of Motion: F = M x A.
    Level 2 Difficulty groups of 2 2 Days
    Balloon-powered Racing Car
    Students construct a racing car out of various materials and power it with the thrust from an inflated balloon. The car must be able to go straight and travel distance is measured. After each trial, students will improve upon their design. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose car can go the farthest.
    Level 3 Difficulty groups of 3-4 2 Days
    Lunar Buggy
    Students design and build a Lunar Buggy out of various materials that will carry cargo and astronauts. The Buggy must then be able to roll down a ramp and proceed at least 100cm beyond it. After each trial, students will improve upon their design. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose buggy can go the farthest.
    Level 4 Difficulty groups of 3-4 2 Days
    Two-Stage Balloon Rocket
    Students will build a multi-stage balloon rocket that they can launch horizontally across the room.  They will learn that the change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.  There will be a contest to see whose rocket can go the furthest.
    Level 4 Difficulty groups of 3-4 2 Days
    Catapult
    Students design and build a catapult out of various materials that can fling a marshmallow into a box 2 meters away. The catapult must not fall apart from the launch and cannot be held in their hands. After each trial, students will improve upon their design. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose catapult can fling the marshmallow into the box.
    Level 5 Difficulty groups of 2-3 2 Days
    Rubber Band Racers
    Students build a car out of various materials and figure out how to use rubber bands to spin the wheels. They then test their cars to determine if they can travel a distance of at least 3 meters. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose car can go the farthest.
    Level 5 Difficulty groups of 3-4 2 Days
    Space Shuttle Launch
    Students  build a Space Shuttle out of various materials and propel it horizontally (or vertically) on a string, using balloon power. The students work together to solve the problem of attaching their shuttle onto the launch cord, creating the propulsion system and improving on the aerodynamic design of the shuttle to propel it farther. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose shuttle can go the farthest.
    Level 5 Difficulty groups of 3-4 2 Days
    Wind Powered Car
    Students design and build a car out of various materials and by using a sail and their breath, they propel the car forward. Different size/shape surface areas of the sail will have different results. After each trial, students will improve upon their design. There will be a contest between all groups to see whose car can go the farthest on the least amount of breaths.
    Level 5 Difficulty groups of 3-4 2 Days
